Let’s face it; there are diets that work for some people all the time, there are also some diets that work for most people sometimes, and there are diet plans that are total hogwash! The key thing is that people diet because they want to look good. If the diet also makes you feel good, then it would be even better!

Those of us who have less positive outlook to life would argue that dieting is a process of consuming food we don’t really like; in minuscule portions; and at ungodly hours of the day! The fact is that these people are merely ill-informed about dieting. Dieting is a system. It’s not merely an eating system, but a more holistic approach to maintain a healthy body weight.

What the pessimists fail to touch upon is the fact that dieting is about moderation. The main thing that separates the successful dieter from others who fail is that she understands the concept of a balanced diet. Simply put, you should forget all you’ve learned about good food vs bad food. There’s no such thing! Food is food, period. However, there are some food that you should take more than others.

Listed below are the food categories, sorted by those you should consume least to those that you should consume more:

Fats, oils and sweets: You should consume these the least. Especially avoid them for dinners.

Dairy products and meat: Although high in protein, they shouldn’t be the main foundation of your meals.

Vegetables and fruits: They are an awesome natural snack and contains virtually zero fat! Tasty and high in fibre; should be included in all your meals.

Starchy food: An excellent source of energy and should be the main foundation of your meals.

So have you identified the secret of a successful diet plan yet? Yes; moderation! You need to understand the importance of each food group and build your diet plan around it. It may not sound like much, but think about it for a while… do our ancestors have fad diet plans back then? How did they manage to stay fit and trim? I guess now you know their secret.

Going on a diet can be quite a challenge. That’s why you’ll need as much help as you can to make it successful. Listed below are twelve of the most effective and popular dieting tips that will lead you towards this objective.

Choose a diet plan and stick with it for a decent length of time

Moderation is key; Too much of anything is bad for you, same goes with having too little of the same thing

Diet alone is not enough, include daily exercise in your schedule even if only for 20 minutes per session

When you just have to eat fast food, go for kiddie meals; Smaller portions = Lower calories

Drink a lot of plain water to avoid dehydration

Remember that losing weight is as simple as burning more calories than you consume

Weight loss supplements can help, but learn more about the products before buying

The main reason a diet plan fails is because of the lack of discipline by the dieter

Avoid having heavy dinners, especially if you’re not particularly active at night

Go for natural flavourings in your food (spices, chillies, etc) rather than MSG

Eat often and eat small

Always keep track of your progress in terms of weight and body measurements as it’s an excellent motivational tool

Dieting isn’t as easy as snapping your fingers and saying “I want to go on a diet!” It is definitely not a spur of the moment decision. The fact is, it is a challenge for most people. To make your diet a much more successful undertaking, I’ve written the following guide on avoiding factors that can contribute to the failure of your diet.

Rushing Head First Into A Diet Program

Have you done this before?

Pick the toughest diet plan and start following it immediately

Feel bad not long after due to lack of preparation and mindset adjustment

Gave up on the diet plan and ending up gaining more weight as you eat more to overcome your mini-depression

Believe it or not, too many people fell into this trap daily! Don’t jump into a diet program that is too restrictive. If you haven’t went into any dieting programs before and unsure if you can follow through with your chosen diet program, then choose a plan that is more reasonable.

The best way is to start with something simple yet achievable and work yourself towards a program that requires more commitment over time.

Expecting To Look Like A Swimsuit Model Overnight

Getting a slim and trim body is not something that can be achieved over a few days. When deciding on your target weight, start with a small figure but be prepared make it more challenging over time. You probably know of someone who has lost significant weight very quickly, we all have.

But remember that no two persons are exactly the same. Even identical twins have different biochemical compositions! Diet results differ from one individual to the next. The important thing is to commit yourself to your own preset, and more importantly realistic, objectives.

Overworking Yourself In The Gym

You’ve motivated yourself and are fully hyped and full of enthusiasm. You want to lose weight even if it kills you! You’re thinking of enrolling in the closest gym and work yourself hard every day!

Stop! If you do that you’d probably really work yourself to death and this, my friend, is definitely not the way to go.

Our bodies need time to recuperate after working out. Although consistency is important, straining your body daily takes up a lot of time. In fact, it even takes out the required recuperation time.

You probably feel guilty of all the years of neglect that you have inflicted on your body. However, Rome wasn’t built in a day… neither will achieving your desired weight.

Declaring A Jihad On Calories

The basis of all diet plans is the reduction of calorie intake. Nevertheless, this shouldn’t be your only objective! Calories aren’t that evil anyway. The key is to achieve a healthy intake of calories that is suitable for your lifestyle.

Do not overdo it! If your calorie intake is insufficient for your daily needs, your body will attempt to consume nearly anything that can be a source of energy. This often leads to malfunctions of key organs such as the liver and kidneys.

You Begin To Develop A Fear Of Food

Do you think reducing the number of meals you consume in a day will help you reach your desired weight faster? Think again!

Dieting is not about blindly reducing your meal intake. It’s a question of balance. Effective dieting is also about eating the right type of food and in the right amount.

You Begin To Replace The Bathroom Scale Every Week

Your weight fluctuates on different days depending on multiple factors. Therefore, benchmarking your success on pounds lost alone can be detrimental to your psyche. If left unchecked, it can lead to depression and worse still, giving up on your diet prematurely.

Remember that you should always think of your psychological health in addition to your physical health. They are not mutually exclusive aims and should approached concurrently.

Your Diet Plan Becomes An Emotional Hostage

In addition to the enthusiasm that motivates people to take a look at their scales daily, there are also psychological factors that influence dieting. Let’s say you’re one of those people who will automatically reach out for some snacks whenever you are bored, irritated or downright pissed off, you should focus more on the issues that incite these emotions in the first place.

Your diet plan is the innocent party here! Don’t let it be sacrificed due to factors which are not caused by it in the first place.

You Begin To Isolate Yourself From The World

Humans are social creatures. Regardless of how independent you are, there are times that having somebody to share your problems with would do you a world of good.

Share with your close friends and family members your dieting ambitions and let them know that you could use their support during this time. Go for psychological consultation if the need arises.

Remember that you’re not alone in this world. In fact, most of the people closest to you would definitely love to see you succeed in achieving your dieting goals.

You Begin To Hate Yourself For Cherishing The Food You Love

The occasional treat is an excellent way of improving your willpower and focus. Diets are merely food consumption control mechanisms, not dungeons. You ate something restricted? So what! A lot of people do, but they are still successful in their diets!

Depriving yourself of something your love can be detrimental to your health. The important thing is to exercise self discipline and not overconsume.

You Start To Lose Track Of Your Dieting Milestones

Always be clear of your objectives. Take real notes using a notepad and pen or your PDA if you have one. What should you be writing down? Why, what you’ve been eating of course!

We’re humans and once a while we tend to consume something that should be avoided. Just be truthful to yourself and schedule a workout to offset this mistake. If you can’t be sincere with yourself, then who else can you count on?

Exercise is of significant importance for everyone. As you become fitter, you reduce your risk of having heart attacks, stroke, diabetes and the plethora of severe and deadly disease. For those who want to shed excess weight, you need to burn roughly 200 to 300 calories daily for a minimum of three to five days each week. This objective can be reached faster and healthier by exercising. Exercising offers tangible rewards that will benefit dieters significantly. This article will highlight some key benefits.

Controlling Your Appetite

Like many people, you would eat out of boredom or habit eventhough you’re not particularly hungry. People tend to eat because they have a psychological need to munch on something. This habit has virtually nothing to do with hunger.

Let’s take the unhealthy habit of consuming junk food while watching a movie as an example. It’s not that the food has any significant nutritional value. It’s just our way of passing time with some minimal activity; in this case, movement of our jaw muscles. If only we knew how much this activity is hurting our body.

Exercise on the other hand, reduces the desire to overeat. What? You find this contradictory? Yes, it’s true! A consistent exercise routine will contribute towards having a healthier appetite.

When you first engage yourself with intense physical activity, you may feel hungry at this stage. Nevertheless, this won’t last long. After a few days into your exercise routine, the feeling of hunger will be replaced with an overall sense of well-being. The fact is, people who exercise regularly will almost automatically eat better and more healthily.

Optimizing Calorie Consumption

It’s not rocket science; in fact the logic is very straightforward: any excess calories that you burn over the amount needed to maintain your current weight will result in weight loss.

Therefore, doing consistent exercise in addition to sticking to a healthy diet increases your metabolic rate. Exercise helps you to lose fat and build muscle tissue. This in turn determines the rate in which your body burns calories. Contrary to fat, muscles are active and require energy to maintain itself. Therefore, the more muscle you have the higher your body’s calorie consumption will be.

Guarding Yourself Against Muscle Loss

Studies conclude that when a person diets, the total weight that’s shed consists of the following:

Fat: 75%

Muscle: 25%

Don’t be impressed by the figures shown above though. Muscle loss is never a good thing! By losing muscle tissues, your body is less able to burn calories efficiently. In order to build muscle, you need to add resistance training (weight lifting is a good example) to your exercise routine.

Looking And Feeling Good

When discussing the merits of exercise, one tends to see only the physical benefits. Nevertheless, the psychologically benefits are just as immense! When we’re working out, our pituitary glands produce chemicals called endorphins. Endorphins provide a natural “high” similar to those produced by opiates.

In addition to that, every time you exercise you’re actually doing something positive for yourself. Many psychologists encourage patients suffering from depression to do daily exercise in order for them to feel better about themselves. It’s scientifically proven that when you feel physically good, you will have a more positive outlook to life.

Once you’re shining with positivity, you will be more committed towards achieving targets. Harness this new found positivity to motivate yourself to stick with your chosen diet plan. Together, exercise and dieting will combine to become a reliable arsenal in your fight against unhealthy weight gain.

The key to successful slimming and not reverting back to your old, unhealthy weight is consistency. You got to commit yourself to work hard day in and day out to live a healthier lifestyle. You should also commit yourself to doing whatever it takes, within your budget (both time and money), to achieve and maintain your ideal weight.

Often, a properly executed yet simple work out can make you feel good in a short period of time. You can include these exercises during your lunch break, or just before an upcoming appointment. What’s good about these exercises is the fact that are not too straining, so won’t sweat that much. Bear in mind though, these routines are not meant for body building, but more towards maintaining a healthy and desirable physical appearance within roughly an hour’s time. It’s vital that you have a healthy snack at least an hour prior to the workout, and a complete meal afterwards.

Cardiovascular and Lower Body Workout

A simple yet effective cardiovascular work out would be daily walks. Doing this simple exercise for half-hour sessions is easy enough for most people. Just jump into your most comfortable trainers and go for a stroll around your area.

If the weather doesn’t permit, don’t abandon this routine! You can simply replace the walk by utilizing a staircase. Just spend 30 minutes going up and down the nearest staircase. This option is not only good for your heart, it also tones your leg muscles.

In order to maintain consistent progression, increase speed of your walks on a weekly basis. You can also exercise your will to succeed by setting goals and gradually increasing the distances you walk. For best results, rotate your cardiovascular sessions for an even more well-rounded work out: alternate between the staircase and walks on a daily basis.

Simple Pushups

Simple pushups will exercise your chest area, triceps and rear deltoids. Go for 3 sets of 10 to 15 repetitions (depending on your fitness level), and increment the repetitions as the movement becomes less challenging. Once they become too easy, increase the workout by elevating your feet on a stable furniture to increase the resistance.

Lay yourself face downwards on the floor with your legs extended straight behind you and with your hands flat down just beneath your shoulders. Please ensure that you keep your back flat and your head in it’s natural position at all times to avoid unnecessary strains.

Ease yourself into the first position by extending your arms, lifting your entire body off the floor surface.

While ensuring that your body’s position is stable, go down until your nose almost touches the floor. Exhale as you push back to the initial position with your chest and arms. Don’t lock your elbows as you need to maintain constant tension on your muscles instead of joints.

Close-Grip Pushups

Close-grip pushups mostly work the tricep muscles, the inner chest and the trunk muscles. Once again, carry out 3 sets of 10 to 15 repetitions (according to your fitness level), and gradually increase the repetitions as the movement becomes easier.

Use the same starting position and breathing pattern as the simple pushup. Bring your hands close to each other forming a triangular shape with your index fingers and thumbs.

As you descend downwards, your elbows should go to your sides. This action applies more strain onto your triceps and inner chest.

Close-grip pushups require more dexterity. By ensuring the stability of your body, your trunk muscles will be worked out through the entire exercise. Initially, close-grip pushups may strain your wrist area, so make sure you’ve done proper stretching and start off slowly.

Wide-Grip Pushups

Wide-grip pushups focuses more on your chest, rear shoulders and areas of your back muscles. Carry out the same sets and reps as mentioned earlier and slowly increase the reps as the movement becomes easier.

Use the same initial position and breathing system as the simple pushup. Your hands should be placed beyond shoulder width, with your fingers pointing headwards. This wider position focuses the tension onto your shoulders and strengthens your pectorals. Wide-grip pushups are significantly harder, so you will tire sooner than with other pushups.

The pushup variations mentioned above will assist in toning and strengthening your upper body muscles. For more exercises, try these simple moves. The only equipment you’ll need are either 8 or 15 kg dumbbells, and a few minutes.

Legs

These exercise will build up muscles in the thigh and buttock areas. Firstly, spread your legs to hip width and keep them fully extended. While holding the dumbbells in each hand and maintaining a straight posture, slowly bend your knees until your thighs are horizontally aligned to the floor. Proceed by slowly returning to the initial position. Repeat this exercise until your legs tire, but don’t overdo it!

Chest

To work out the pectorals, lie flat on a bed (facing upwards) and hold a weight in both hands hovering them above your chest. Extend your arms while having the palms facing each other. Next, lower the dumbbells outwards and downwards until they are parallel to your shoulders. Slowly breathe out, and lift the dumbbells back to their starting position. Go for eight sets of 8 to 12 reps.

Arms

The following exercise will assist in strengthening your biceps. Sit on the edge of a secured, heavy chair with your both feet placed apart to about hip width. Hold the weights with your palms facing inwards towards your body. Extend your arm, and alternately curl the dumbbells up one at a time in a small arc towards your shoulder. Be sure to rotate your forearm so that your palm faces your shoulder at the end of the upward movement. Aim for three sets of 8 to 12 reps.

Among the most important things people want to know when they think it is the time to reduce some of their daily food consumption is which diet is the best. Although we are all from different backgrounds, we all share a common objective: a diet that can make us thin the fastest time possible. Some sort of miracle pill or organic plant that makes fat go away and never to return again! That’s actually the second part of the magic: how to make sure that all the fat eliminated through dieting stays lost for good.

Due to the numerous diet plans published in reading materials and online, most people are confused rather than educated when it comes to dieting bringing about positive physical changes to their body. The sheer number of overweight people has turned weight loss into a billion dollar industry and it is growing bigger every year! The trend seems to highlight that all one needs is a fashionable idea and a marketing edge in order to make a lot of money or gain almost instant publicity by showcasing some otherworldly diet, despite their lack of professional calibre.

The fact that there are a lot of diets programs out there doesn’t help either. We’re going to highlight here only the most well-known diets. A review of all the diets promoted throughout the industry would only add more noise to the already blurred picture. We have no intention to make the situation worse!

The Atkins Diet

Undeniably, the Atkins diet is one of the most popular diet plans. Assisted by numerous articles praising its extraordinary results, in addition to the numerous correspondences from satisfied customers it’s no wonder that the Atkins diet is one of the most successful.

One major plus point of the Atkins diet is that it lets you eat relatively fatty dairy products like butter and cheese. However, the Atkins diet has fallen in popularity recently over suspicions of increasing the risk of coronary diseases. In addition to that, there are also reported cases of stomach discomfort, weakness, muscle cramps and skin irritation. Nevertheless, the scientific discussion with regards to the Atkins diet still rages on til this very day.

The Jenny Craig Diet

One of the oldest diet programs, Jenny Craig started operating in the early 80s and it still exits to this day. The basic idea of this diet is a trade off: you won’t need to be bothered about choosing recipes, do grocery shopping and even cooking.

Instead you need to purchase the Jenny Craig prepackaged food. And it’s not cheap either, the costs can run to roughly $100 per week! Add the membership costs, vegetables and fruits expenses (not included in the prepackaged food) it actually costs more than a typical household diet.

That said, if you can afford it and if you are disciplined enough to stick to it, the diet is quite good. However do consider the fact that similar low-calorie foods can be bought off the shelf without the need to prior discussion with a Jenny Craig representative that insists on consuming the prepackaged food because he gets a cut from your purchase.

The Zone Diet

The Zone diet is another reknown diet program. This diet is the result of studies conducted by Barry Sears and it focuses on eating the right combination of foods to achieve optimal hormonal balance. This state of equilibrium, which is called the “Zone”, lets the body optimally consume calories and use them throughout the day without putting anything aside as fat.

Nevertheless, the Zone diet applies some serious discrimination among foods without any scientific basis. Starchy vegetables, whole grains and beans are considered “bad”, although these foods are not contradictory with the principles of the diet. The American Heart Association has issued a statement regarding the Zone diet which basically says that it lacks essential nutrients at the expense of over-promoting high-protein foods.

The South Beach Diet

One of the most controversial diet due to it’s attempt to pursue the right idea with the wrong approach. Bear in mind however, it’s not that the South Beach diet can’t work… on the contrary, it does; as thousands can attest to.

However, the fundamental question is: can you really stick to it? The initial stagee of the diet will eliminate most foods containing carbohydrates from your daily consumption. Luckily though, this phase lasts only for a fortnight.

Unfortunately, second phase focuses on a poorly implimented total consumption of only whole grains and fruits and lasts ad infinitum. If reaching your desired weight takes you one year, then that is exactly how long you’ll be stuck in this phase. Worse still, if you don’t like the strict food regiment allowed by this diet then you’re out of luck as there are no alternatives.

Weight Watchers

Weight Watchers has been around so long that your grandparents would probably know about it off the bat. Far from being obsolote, Weight Watchers is actually one of the better diet programs around due to the fact that it empowers the participant with all the weight management tools he needs.

If you are really devoted to losing weight, you have all the information you need to execute the plan. It helps that you’ll also have the comfort and support from a lot of people who are going through the exact same thing. If having companionship during trying times helps your willpower, then you are probably on the way to lose those unwanted pounds. On the other hand, if peer pressure is more of a demotivational factor, then Weight Watchers might not be suitable for you.

By sharing this short review, we’ve identified some of the most popular and successful diets out there. There are literally hundreds of other diets out there but the best thing to do when choosing a diet is to study it as thoroughly as possible.

Observer the feedback from people who have tried it. Then consult your doctor or dietitian to see what they have to say about it. Between those waxing lyrical and those trying to prove the diet lacks merit you can probably discover the truth yourself. Nevertheless, pay special attention to what medical professionals have to say. If they tell you a certain diet bears a certain risk to your body then think twice before giving it a go.
